Swine Flu and You, Part Two
The following information is from a newsletter that my wife, Laurie Morse, L.Ac., writes. I want you to have the solid grounded information Laurie provides about how to best protect yourself against swine flu in specific and illness in general. (If you’re in the San Diego area, Laurie is offering as a public service a free one-hour class, Strengthen Your Immune System Now, on Friday May 8, 2009 at her offices. She will go into greater depth with the information below. Event details are at the end of this post. Click here to go straight to those details.)
Your Best Defense is a Healthy Immune System
We live amidst a myriad of micro-organisms on this planet. We even have a variety of micro-organisms in our body at any one given time. Some of them are bacterial or viral (among others). Every living organism is seeking life force, including you. That is nature.
You win and keep your own life force when you are stronger than an organism. You lose your life force to an organism when it is stronger than you.
Your immune system is constantly working, monitoring, eliminating, fighting off, and keeping your life force available to you. That is it’s job. Your job is to give it the tools necessary to do a good job.
Your body needs good tools, it needs you to manage yourself so it can keep you strong. If you don’t give your body certain things it would be like asking a carpenter to put a new roof on your house without a hammer and nails. That makes no sense. Neither does it make sense to over-burden your immune system or withold what it needs to keep you healthy.
If a virus strikes a weak system, it has a better chance of "winning". If it strikes a healthy system, it may put up a fight, but it won’t win. Even if an antivral medication is needed, it will do much better in a strong, rather than a weak system. That is the best strategy to adopt in the face of Swine Flu.
You know how they say…"the best defense is a good offense"? In that light, rather than hearing the news and worrying, use your energy to build a good offense. It will serve you well.
What You Can Do to Strenthen Your Immune System
Below is a list of things that greatly support the immune system. Do as many of them as possible. Every little bit helps.
- Adequate sleep
- Wash your hands regularly
- Sneeze into a tissue or your arm rather than your hands
- A good vitamin/mineral supplement (preferably liquid)
- Vitamin C Complex
- Vitamin D
- Omega 3 Fatty Acids
- Little or no refined sugar (it depletes the immune system)
- Plenty of whole foods (there is life force in whole food, whereas processed foods have little or no life force left after processing)
- Acupuncture & Herbs**
**I have handfuls of patients who for years have avoided getting sick because of regular tune-ups. Their immune systems are strong. There is one chinese formula in particular that I will teach you how to take when a viral or bacterial pathogen poses a threat to you. It is called Yin Chiao and has been around for thousands of years. I literally NEVER leave home without it. It has saved me countless times (especially in that I treat sick people a fair amount) from getting sick. It’s miraculous in my eyes and it’s helpful to know how to use it. You’ll know by 5:00 May 8th how to do the same 🙂
Might I Have Swine Flu? Symptoms to Watch For
I am someone who likes to be informed and then take the necessary steps to meet with, whenever possible, a good outcome. In this way, I find it unnecessary to live in fear or a state of "alarm". That being said if you, or someone you know has any of the following symptoms, please contact your doctor immediately:
-A fever greater than 100
-Runny nose and/or sore throat
-Vomiting and/or diarrhea
-Fatigue (may be extreme)
-Lack of appetite
-Achy joints (more than your typical joint aches)
As I began writing this newsletter I realized that I can’t explain everything to the lengths that I’d like, so I’m going to offer a free 1hr. educational class that will go into detail about each item below. How to take it and when. When to do what, and why, as it relates to your immunity.
I think we are more apt to follow through on a healthy regimen if we understand the why’s and how’s.
There is no cost for this class, anyone is welcome.
